Jr. High Career Counselor
When I was in middle school English class, my teacher had us take a personality test that was going to help us determine what type of career we were naturally drawn to. I remember this exercise distinctly because I used to LOVE taking quizzes in magazines, reading my horoscope everyday, always looking for ways to learn something new about myself.
I raced through that scantron (anyone remember those?!) excited to get my results. Once everyone was finished, we got into groups to determine the results and discuss our futures. I got: Career Counselor. At 13, my results couldn’t have been more uninspiring. I sat there quizzically reading about what a career counselor actually does. My peers on the other hand were exclaiming “Doctor! Professor! Lawyer!” in the background as I took a long time to process these words. Career Counselor.
When I got home from school that day, I asked my mom casually, “What exactly does a career counselor do?” Out of context she just said, “They help others choose what they want to be when they grow up.” I sat there emotionally deflated. What about me? What about MY career? Granted I had no idea what I wanted to be in the first place so it’s not like I was upset that I got results that disproved my passions. But being a teenager, I wasn’t aware that my innate ability to help others was something I could do for a living.
Here I am 20 years later and FINALLY answering this calling to genuinely, deeply help others as a life coach. I’ve studied everything from psychology to photography but there were little affirmations along the way that aided me in arriving right here, right now, and in your path.
It’s funny to me how often we don’t take heed to the messages that show up unexpectedly. It begs the question: What affirmations did you miss along the way?
